Adoption is a meaningful and life-changing process that requires emotional readiness, stability, and strong support systems.
The adoption evaluation provides a professional and compassionate assessment designed to support both the adoptive family and the well-being of the child.
Pre-Adoption Evaluations
A preadoption evaluation is a special type of psychological evaluation. Most domestic and international adoption agencies require adoptive parents to complete a pre-adoption psychological evaluation.
This is a comprehensive mental health screening required by many adoption agencies, family courts, and foreign governments (particularly in international adoptions). Its primary goal is to ensure that the individuals or couples are emotionally stable, prepared for the unique complexities of raising an adopted child, and have healthy coping mechanisms. It is normal for applicants to feel anxious about this step, but it is less about “judging” someone’s worth and more about assessing psychological readiness and identifying where they might need support.
Remember, the goal here is to assess parental preparedness (particularly with regard to socioemotional well-being, stress management, coping skills, etc.), especially given the added complexities and stress associated with adoption. Some of the questions may seem uncomfortable, but no one expects you to be a perfect person or perfect parent. Be honest in your interview. If you have fears or apprehensions about being a parent, it is OK to discuss that. We hope to create a safe space where you feel comfortable talking openly and honestly. We expect someone considering becoming a parent of an adopted child to have concerns or fears. Some of the questions you will be asked could cause an emotional reaction for you, such as questions about marriage or the potential adopted child’s biological
parents. If you can consider the possibility of such questions before you join the interview, it can help you be more prepared and relaxed. The truth is we want you to be yourself and open with us.
Unfortunately, medical insurance does not pay for these types of assessments as the assessment is not viewed as medically necessary.
Because of that, we make every effort to ensure that we complete assessments needed by adoption agencies, without doing more or less than is requested by the agency, in order to keep prices affordable.
