This assessment may be useful for:
Measures reasoning, problem-solving, memory, and processing skills. Common examples include tests such as the WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children).
Measures what the person has learned in areas such as reading, math, and writing.
Some evaluations also look at creativity, leadership, artistic talent, motivation, and social-emotional functioning.
The goal is usually to determine whether a student qualifies for gifted education programs, advanced coursework, enrichment opportunities, or other services designed to provide an appropriate level of challenge.
Giftedness testing is not just an IQ test. Modern evaluations often consider multiple sources of information, including test scores, school performance, teacher observations, and sometimes portfolios or interviews.
Not all schools have the same criteria for identifying gifted students. Test scores can be influenced by language background, educational opportunities, anxiety, and other factors. A single score does not define a person’s potential or worth.
