Burn out

Burnout Therapy

Recovering Energy, Motivation, and Emotional Strength

WHAT IS BURNOUT?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. Burnout is typically defined by three components:

People often blame themselves for burnout, viewing it as personal weakness or poor time management.
Psychologists have found that burnout is almost always a mismatch between a person and their
environment across six key areas:

Phases of Therapy

Therapists typically approach burnout recovery sequentially. Attempting to make massive life changes when you are completely depleted usually backfires, so the process is phased.

Phase 1: Stabilization & Triage

Immediate Relief

The priority here is physical and emotional safety. Your therapist will help you “stop the bleeding” by identifying immediate stressors that can be paused or delegated. Therapy sessions focus heavily on somatic (body-based) practices to shift your nervous system out of a chronic freeze state, prioritizing sleep hygiene, basic nutrition, and absolute permission to rest.

Phase 2: Deconstruction & De-shaming

Processing the Experience

Burnout carries a heavy load of guilt and a sense of personal failure. In this phase, you separate your identity from your output. Your therapist helps you look at the systemic factors (work environment, toxic dynamics, unfeasible workloads) so you can stop blaming yourself for a natural human reaction to prolonged stress.

Phase 3: Reconstruction & Boundary Building

Long-term Prevention

Once your energy reserves begin to return, therapy shifts toward building a sustainable framework for the future. You will identify your personal “early warning signs” of stress and actively practice asserting boundaries, saying no, and decoupling your self-worth from your achievements.

Modalities Used to Treat Burnout

1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & ACT

Burnout is often driven by deeply ingrained internal narratives like, “If I don’t do it, everything will fall apart,” or “Rest is lazy.”
